Greetings from Our Therapist & Counsellor

Hello, and pleased to e-meet you!

I'm Sufian, a member of both the Association of Psychotherapist and Counsellors Singapore (APACS, Reg. No. A0393) and the Singapore Association of Counsellors (SAC, Reg. No. D0747) and accredited by the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW, Reg. No. 0783).

I initially trained in Social Work at NUS and started my career providing counselling in youth, marital and family issues at general and specialized family service centres.

I then specialized in counselling for couples and blended families before embarking on further graduate training in Family Therapy at King's College London.

During my time in the UK, I also trained at a Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service and made my first foray into mental healthcare.

Upon my return to Singapore, I practised at the Institute of Mental Health where my area of focus was in mood disorders such as depression, doing individual as well as group therapy.

I transitioned back into community counselling as I completed my Master of Counselling at Monash University.  This included working at the Family Therapy Institute as well as focusing on inter-cultural families and community mental health services, while running a small private practice.

A message from a former Greek colleague

During the COVID pandemic period, I returned to the acute hospital setting and worked in community health, inpatient wards and the ICU with patients and their families.

I am now fully in private practice with 15 years of experience in treating individuals, groups and families from different cultures with a diverse range of relational, social, emotional, mental health and general health issues, most commonly adjustment issues, low mood, anxiety and relationship issues.

The clients that I have served have also spanned the different stages of life - from adolescents, young adults, couples, young parents to the elderly.

As a clinician, I have had the opportunity to train and practise in both systemic psychotherapy and cognitive behaviour therapy modalities, encompassing well-known modalities such as solution-focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, family-focused therapy and so forth.

Thus, I adopt an integrative approach to therapy that pulls together all these experiences of working with clients and multi-disciplinary professionals in different contexts.

(This breadth also informs me with a unique supervisory lens when engaging with my students, due to the experience of having been both a social worker and a counsellor, in both the social services and healthcare settings, and specifically in general medicine, critical care, community health and mental health.)

I strongly believe in a balanced approach to therapy, balancing clinical intuition, being research-informed and most importantly, what fits and works for my clients' circumstances.

My practice is guided by the Client-Directed Outcome-Informed approach and the Single-Session Therapy approach, meaning that your therapy will be brief and not last longer than what is necessary for your issue.  Therefore, I am an advocate for Concise intervention!

For prospective clients and students out there, it has usually been helpful to know during the course of our interaction that I'm a married and proud father of two girls and I'm a sports fan - it's usually a good conversation starter!
